LIVE TEXT: 2025 Jerez Test

Stay up to date with all the goings-on in the south of Spain amid a crucial one-day Test

Monday, April 28th

10:00 - Good morning everyone, caught your breath yet after the Spanish GP? What a weekend it was in Jerez, but the action keeps on coming. Riders are back on track on Monday for a one-day Test, and we'll be bringing you updates throughout the day right here!

10:10 - Of the full timers, it's Maverick Viñales (Red Bull KTM Tech3) and Pecco Bagnaia (Ducati Lenovo Team) heading out first! On the testing roster, MotoGP Legend Dani Pedrosa (Red Bull KTM Factory Racing) is out in orange and Lorenzo Savadori is back on duty for Aprilia.

10:15: After his crash yesterday resulting in a neck contusion, Franco Morbidelli (Pertamina Enduro VR46 Racing Team) will sit out the test today. The team say the Italian only had a light plan anyway so instead he'll switch into recovery mode. Since he's not heading out again here, he'll need to be passed fit to ride on Thursday in France. Feel better, Franky!

10:50: A crash for Pedro Acosta (Red Bull KTM Factory Racing) at Turn 10; he and the bike are back in the box - not ideal for the #37, with this test being hailed as "crucial" ahead of the Grand Prix.

11:00: As confirmed on Sunday afternoon, Aleix Espargaro will relinquish this test to Takaaki Nakagami, who is back in the saddle for Honda - they have three bikes in the garage, so a lot of data acquisition and analysing will be in order across the day.

11:20: Marco Bezzecchi (Aprilia Racing) looks to forget his Spanish GP and is straight into test mode; he continues to use the new rear aero package that was debuted this weekend. Temporary teammate and official test rider for Aprilia Lorenzo Savadori has both of his RS-GPs mounted with the older version for now...

11:50: Four manufacturers in the top four: Marc Marquez (Ducati Lenovo Team) is on top ahead of Fabio Quartararo (Monster Energy Yamaha MotoGP), Johann Zarco (CASTROL Honda LCR) and Marco Bezzecchi (Aprilia Racing) in P4. Top KTM honours at the moment belong to Brad Binder (Red Bull KTM Factory Racing) in P7.

13:00: Marc Marquez closes out the first session at the top. It's one session really today, but there's a stop at 13:00 for a Practice Start session.

13:20: We're back! Practice Starts done, and despite some of the power issues affecting Spain and Portugal, we're on the back up power supply at Jerez. Action has been uninterrupted and we've even managed to bring you the Midday Live on social media!

14:05: A 1:36.489 from Quartararo is the top time since the session times reset after the Practice Starts. Rins and Nakagami are circulating at the moment but we're waiting for action to ramp back up!

15:00: As of 3pm local time, Rins has cut the gap to his teammate at the top and is just 0.018 off now!

15:20: Quartararo has improved again though! It's now a 1:36.353 benchmark in the afternoon session and continues to be a Yamaha show on top at the moment. Rins is done for the day too and was pretty complimentary about the new engine they've been testing - not the V4, no - the updated inline four.

15:35: Quartararo also done now. The Frenchman leaves Jerez with pole position and a fresh Grand Prix podium in his pocket on the way to his home round next. And with some pretty positive feedback about that engine too. Will his lap stay fastest by the end of play in testing? We'll find out!

16:00: Sit rep! it's a Yamaha 1-2, with Marc Marquez third and Bezzecchi fourth at 4pm. Aldeguer is fifth after the rookie spent the day working mainly on settings, still settling in to the premier class.

16:25: After sitting out the morning due to arm pump troubles, Somkiat Chantra (IDEMITSU Honda LCR) went down at Turn 10. Rider ok! Team boss Lucio Cecchinello says the Thai rider plans to have surgery for it soon but it's not expected that he'll sit out Le Mans. Let's see!

16:37: Marc Marquez has topped the afternoon again! The #93 slams in a 1:35 to head the timesheets by nearly half a second. Quartararo has finished up for the day so won't have the right of reply... will anyone else?

17:00: More of an update from the TV set than the on track times, but Aprilia Racing's Paolo Bonora joined us to talk about their day. Braking and stability was a key focus, and in the afternoon aerodynamics. It's not been the smoothest start to 2025 for the Noale factory so they'll be glad of the test day, especially without reigning Champion Jorge Martin on track at the moment AND without the concessions being utilised by Yamaha and Honda.

17:30: You know how Maverick Viñales always heads out late on a test day and puts in some serious laps? The #12 has done it again. It's not enough to have deposed Marquez at the top, but the Red Bull KTM Tech3 rider takes over in second in the afternoon session. Forgive us not doing the maths ourselves yet and waiting for the combined standings...

17:45: An interesting debrief from Ducati Lenovo Team manager Davide Tardozzi. First, he said they have the old swingarm being tested to see how it goes with current bike configuration. Second, he says Marquez was working on the front end and Bagnaia on balance. Third, a great quote on the two working together: "Not many people thought it was possible, but not only do we have two great Champions - we have two intelligent riders." Yup not sure anyone can argue.

18:00: The Jerez Test comes to a close! it's Marc Marquez somewhat characteristically top, as though his laptimes down the field on Sunday didn't prove enough of a point! We'll have a few more updates from the track though still yet across motogp.com. First up have a read of what Aki Ajo, Red Bull KTM Factory Racing Team Manager, had to say on the social midday live - with plenty of positivity there.

After hours: And here's the rundown from the factory team on that new engine at Yamaha! Have a listen to what they had to say... and see you in Le Mans?
