Fabrizio Lai started racing at seven, in motocross. Ten years later, he was clinching the European Minimoto title before starting to race 125cc bikes in the Aprilia Challenge in 1998. The following year saw him taking third in the Italian 125cc Championship, and he went on to clinch the title in 2002 after various appearances on the European and Spanish scenes. He retained the title in 2003 and also made his Grand Prix debut with Malaguti. In 2004 he rode for the Metis Gilera Racing team and finished 16th overall, but a move to Honda with Kopron Racing World for 2005 saw the Italian improve dramatically to conclude the campaign in sixth position. Lai represented Valsir Seedorf Racing in 2006 and with his best result being a third placed podium mount in Le Mans he ended up 11th overall in the final point tally. Along with several other competitors who have graduated from the 125 category, the 28 year old rider moves up to the quarter litre class this season with Campetella Racing.
