Rider Story

2013 WorldSSP Champion Sam Lowes moved to Moto2™ in 2014 and after a rookie year of learning the Brit took his first win at the Circuit of the Americas in 2015. Another four podiums with the Speed Up squad that year then saw him move to Federal Oil Gresini Moto2 for 2016; a title challenger from the start and taking another six podiums – of which two were wins. Lowes moved up with Gresini to the Aprilia Racing Team Gresini premier class effort for 2017, and had a tough season but did score his first premier class points. For 2018 he returned to Moto2™ with Swiss Innovative Investors and KTM, but after a difficult season, Lowes rejoined Federal Oil Gresini Moto2 for 2019 but found the going tough, failing to finish on the rostrum. The following year saw him move the EG 0,0 Marc VDS and the change of scenery helped him end a four-year wait for victory at a wet French GP, and much like British buses, after waiting an age for one, three came in a row thanks to outstanding performances in the Aragon double. It was the first time since Phil Read in 1971 that a British rider won three races in a row and it meant that he was now in control of the title race. However, a disastrous crash out in the following Grand Prix in Valencia saw him concede the Championship lead from which he never recovered, eventually finishing third in the standings thanks to a fourth non-victorious rostrum finish of the season in Portimao. Back-to-back wins at the Qatar and Doha GPs season openers set the Brit up for another title tilt, but despite a podium in Jerez, three DNFs in the following four races saw him lose ground on a dominant Red Bull KTM Ajo double act. By the time he stood on the podium again, taking victory at the Emilia Romagna GP with three rounds remaining, he was already out of the title race and had to settle for fourth in the Championship. The Briton started 2022 off with a podium in Qatar, but it largely proved a season to forget with injury playing a part in an inconsistent year. Remaining with the Marc VDS team for 2023, Lowes will be hopeful of rediscovering his winning touch.
