Axel Pons, son of double 250cc World Champion Sito Pons, debuted in the World Championship 125 class in 2008 with three wildcard rides and in 2009 made his full World Championship debut for the Pepe World Pons WRB 250 Team. In 2010 he made the step up to the new Moto2™ class, riding for his father’s team on board the Pons Kalex machine. For 2014, Pons switched from his family-run outfit to the AGR Team and saw an improvement in results, which led to his renewal for 2015 and 2016. For 2017, Pons moves to RW Racing GP as the team move up to the intermediate class.
