Rider Story

A former dirt track racer with a national 250cc production title and domestic 125cc experience, Anthony West debuted in the 250 World Championship in 1999 ending 12th in his first year and then sixth the following season. A year in 500cc in 2001 followed in which he placed 18th. West returned to the 250cc class in 2003 on an Aprilia with one win and four podiums to place 7th overall. Halfway through the following season he stepped up to the premier class, replacing Olivier Jacque on the Kawasaki team. He ended 15th overall after 11 races, continuing in 2008 with the Japanese manufacturer for its final season in MotoGP. After a year away in 2009 West returned to the World Championship for the new Moto2 category, riding two seasons for the MZ Racing team. His experience was then called upon by the QMMF team for the 2012 campaign, during which he rode a Moriwaki, after which the team switched to a Speed Up bike. This brought West two podiums in succession, most notably the one at his home race. He remained with the team for 2013, but post-season came the news that West had lost all race results between Le Mans 2012 and October 2013 in a long-running anti-doping case. The Australian started afresh in 2014 and made headlines with victory at Assen, 11 years after his only previous GP career win. West rode for QMMF Racing Team again in 2015 however they parted company after the San Marino GP. With Karel Abraham injured, Anthony West was called up to ride in the AB Motoracing team for both the Australian and Malaysian GPs due to his previous experience in the premier class.
