Marquez equals Lorenzo as new records appear on the horizon

The #93 matched the MotoGP Legend's podium tally in Qatar, so what's next for the current title race leader?

MotoGP records and Marc Marquez (Ducati Lenovo Team) sound familiar in the same sentence, don’t they? After clinching an unexpected – in Marquez’s eyes – victory at the Qatar Airways Grand Prix of Qatar, the six-time MotoGP World Champion drew level with two of his former teammates and rivals as Marquez powered his way back into the overall standings lead.

Level with Jorge Lorenzo and Dani Pedrosa

Back at the Grand Prix of Argentina, Marquez equalled MotoGP Legend Angel Nieto on 90 Grand Prix victories. Now, following Qatar’s success, Marquez has caught Jorge Lorenzo and Dani Pedrosa in both the MotoGP and overall Grand Prix podium tally charts.

Marquez now has 114 podium finishes in MotoGP – the same number that three-time MotoGP World Champion Lorenzo earned during his glittering career. And at the same time, the 2025 World Championship leader notched up his 153rd rostrum across all classes – the same total as Pedrosa. When the next top three result on a Sunday arrives, Marquez will become the highest achieving Spanish rider in Grand Prix racing in terms of number of podiums reached. There would be no better place to do that than in Jerez...

On the horizon: a pole position centurion

A 100% pole position record in 2025 has seen Marquez begin to race towards the 100 MotoGP pole position target. The #93 would be the first rider to achieve this feat, and currently, the Ducati star is on 98. Touching distance.

Following the footsteps of Agostini and Rossi

Having pocketed his 65th MotoGP victory in Lusail, Marquez is now only three wins away from matching Giacomo Agostini’s premier class tally of 68 wins. Valentino Rossi’s 89 MotoGP wins stand as an all-time record that will continue to be the peak for a while yet – but that could be the next target soon.

In addition, Marquez’s overall Grand Prix victory record stands at 91. That 93rd that doesn’t feel very far away will be a special one for obvious reasons, but Marquez is closing in on joining Agostini (122) and Rossi (115) in the 100 Grand Prix wins club.

Of course, records are nice. However, the main focus for Marquez will be on 2025’s title chase. He leads it coming into his home Grand Prix in Jerez as a special weekend at a crown in MotoGP’s jewel beckons.
