Garcia sets the pace as Ogura crashes late

The Spaniard was quickest in Practice 2, finishing ahead of Salac and Arbolino as Ogura suffered an early end to the Austrian GP

The Moto2™ field had one more chance to earn a spot in the top 14, with lap records falling and Sergio Garcia (MT Helmets – MSI) heading into qualifying fastest. The #3 set a new lap record, ending Saturday morning 0.163s ahead of Filip Salac (Elf Marc VDS Racing Team), with the #12 ending an impressive session, consistently showing strong pace. Salac set a strong time early on, briefly topping the timesheets before ending the session in second, ahead of his teammate Tony Arbolino (Elf Marc VDS Racing Team). The Italian was back on form, rounding out the top three after a strong time late in the session.

The pace was instantly hot, with the lap record broken early on Garcia topping the timesheets. However, most of the field waited until the final 10 minutes, with work still to do for some big names. There was an interruption to proceedings, with Ai Ogura (MT Helmets – MSI) suffering a highside at Turn 2b – bringing out the red flag. The #79 went to the medical centre for a check and was diagnosed with a fracture in his right hand and has been declared unfit for the Austrian GP. The session was then restarted with seven minutes remaining, leading to an exciting end to Practice 2.

Fourth place went the way of Aron Canet (Fantic Racing), who has his future secured for 2025 and continues to look competitive. The #44 was ahead of Ogura, who dropped to fifth after he was unable to return to the track after his late crash. Manuel Gonzalez (QJMOTOR Gresini Moto2™) was a strong sixth, setting a strong 1:33.692 and finishing in front of Championship contender, Joe Roberts (OnlyFans American Racing Team). The American was seventh, placing ahead of Celestino Vietti (Red Bull KTM Ajo), as the Italian took the eighth spot.

The final spots inside the top 10 went the way of Darryn Binder (Liqui Moly Husqvarna Intact GP) and Somkiat Chantra (IDEMITSU Honda Team Asia) as Jake Dixon (CFMOTO Inde Aspar Team) was outside the top 10 in P11. However, the British GP winner will still earn a spot in Q2 and was ahead of Alonso Lopez (Sync SpeedUp) in 12th. The #21 was found time late in the session, ending the morning ahead of the returning Deniz Öncü (Red Bull KTM Ajo), while the final spot inside the top 14 went the way of Marcos Ramirez (OnlyFans American Racing Team). Meanwhile, some big names are now forced to battle in Q1, including Fermin Aldeguer (Sync SpeedUp), who finished in 24th with work to do.
